Many of us left the Police, because they threw out the baby with the bath water; we do not condone the violence, the withdrawal from the community, the lack of engagement, that mars the current service.
Ex-Police investigators can bring a different perspective to some investigations. We can see where investigative mistakes were made, where possible alternate leads were not pursued, or procedure not followed.
This is especially so for criminal investigations; ex-police investigators understand what is evidence, and the different standards of evidence for criminal, and civil, actions. The police once fostered lateral thinkers, and good investigators; unfortunately they now focus on compliance, not lateral thinking, and have withdrawn from public engagement.
Somewhere during this process many of the good, but unconventional, thinkers were lost. The experienced detectives were discarded, as not aligning with the 'new' Police Service.
The old detective sergeant who knew 'things' was not as valued as the young high flyer. Trouble is the old sergeant had been there forever, knew the crooks, and their families, their histories.
They could identify offenders MOs. Old detectives actually knew the offenders, and their associates, through multiple interactions. They investigate effectively through these connections.
The focus has become rank progression, climbing the 'corporate' ladder of promotion, as the only acceptable 'sign' of success, with computer driven policing activity. We have benefited from this, as private investigators, which is in some ways a sad reflection on the system.
Fortunately, we have benefited from training, old style training, when the actual training had value, not just designed to achieve a KPI, or get a promotion. Their loss is your gain.
Our ex-Police investigators have been out long enough to have lost the 'Police' attitude, and as such, recognise that the quality of Police investigation varies. The justification for Police actions can be variable.
Some current Police not above breaking the law, in expectation they will be 'protected'. Many are of the opinion that their transgressions will be dealt with internally, rather than be exposed to the criminal system, or a tribunal.
This has been demonstrated multiple times. Some Police have gone so far as to actually appeal, on the grounds their offending should have been dealt internally.
For some, unfortunately, this concept of protection is right. They may come from the right family. They may have the right connections. This is true on the Gold Coast, in Brisbane, or across Queensland.
At times the 'deep pockets' of the Government, the Police department, and the Police Union, prevent action against them by a normal person. There is a suspicion that this protection reaches to the highest levels of Government, with politicians immune to the law.
Of course the politicians declare all are equal before the law. However the axiom "actions speak louder than words" rings true, with regards this. The depth of the pockets often rules.
We have no power, no authority, to investigate such things. The politicians have divided those that do into different groups, each with limited powers, so no-one actually has the authority.
If you have been charged by the Police, remember that this does not automatically make you guilty of anything, or make you guilty of the crime you are charged with. At times police fail to understand the evidence, the elements, of an offence.
At time policy does not let the prosecution correct their error, without the claimed victim agreeing. It has become a bizarre system, for many.
A court action is about policy, the process, and precedent, more than guilt and innocence. We have seen people plead guilty to matters they were not guilty of, for their own reasons.
This may be after a barrister, or solicitor, explains that the early plea deal on offer almost guarantees no conviction being recorded, because of a clean record, they are tempted. The other option, going to trial, or before a jury trial does not guarantee a not guilty, even if innocent.
We gather the evidence that indicates innocence, for the client. We have had great success in brief preparation. Quirks in the law, and community attitudes, do give a slight bias towards the Police in some matters.
We can conduct a criminal investigation, we are criminal investigators by training. We are part of a network that provide a service across Australia.
